Poultry Housing Systems
Understanding different housing systems for your backyard poultry farm. Learn how to choose the right system for your space, budget, and goals. Proper housing is crucial for bird health, growth performance, and your overall success as a farmer.
Overview The Three Main Housing Systems
Choosing the right housing system is one of the most important decisions you'll make as a poultry farmer. Each system has different cost implications, management demands, and suitability for different bird types. Let's walk through all three.
Battery Cages are the most popular choice for layer (egg-producing) birds. These metal cages are arranged in tiers, allowing you to maximise your space by housing more birds in a smaller area. The design makes egg collection incredibly easy since eggs roll forward into collection trays. Feed and water management is simpler, and diseases spread less quickly because birds are separated.
Wooden Cages offer a more affordable entry point into poultry farming. Local carpenters can construct these using readily available materials, making them budget-friendly and easy to repair or modify. They work well for small-scale operations and backyard farming. The downside is that wood absorbs moisture and can harbour disease-causing organisms over time, requiring more frequent cleaning and eventual replacement.
Room Pens provide the most natural environment for your birds. These are enclosed structures with concrete or block walls where birds move freely on a floor covered with bedding material like wood shavings. This system is ideal for broilers since they need space to move and grow properly. It's also versatile — you can use it for layers, broilers, or mixed flocks. Birds tend to develop stronger immune systems due to natural movement. However, you'll need more land space and more time on daily management.
If you're focused on egg production with limited space, battery cages are your best bet. For broiler farming or if you're starting small with a tight budget, room pens offer flexibility and healthier birds. Wooden cages work well as a stepping stone for beginners testing the waters of poultry farming.
